New friends - new game plans

Hi , All of you.
Sorry for being so dormant all these days, hopefully iam back.
At least to answer your questions, i thought of posting these emails here and answering them so it can help everyone.
Dr.Nima from Virginia wants to know where to start from and she is studying after a lay off 6 years , this is my advise...
Dear Dr. Poornima,
My suggestion would be to start with micro. Thats the easiest to start with and gives you immense confidence.
Look at the video lectures.
Virus video lecture is 4 hours ..then do the usmle notes ..make your own notes, only your notes will help you in the end.
Then switch to Bacteria thats 6 hour lecture - do it in 2 parts and then do the rest Basic micro, fungus, parasite same way, stick to video and usmle lecture notes for now.
Even if you take 3-4 days to do all once. Its ok.
Repeat and revise. 2days Total time 7 days.
The lady who does the usml biochem lectures is too good, she really gives you confidence.
Once you are done, you will feel good.
Then switch to biochem..

Dr.Vincent from Melboune wants to do Graduate orthodontics in USA (MSD)
his question was what will he need as course material

This is what he says
Hi,

I'm a practicing dentist from Melbourne, Australia. I graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2006 and have been working in private practice for 4 years now.

I'm interested in applying for a postgraduate orthodontic course in an American University, and I know to apply to most courses I would have to sit at least the NBDE part I.

Just been reading your website about NBDE part I. Its very informative.

I was hoping you could give me basic information about the NBDE part I,
- how much time I would need to devote to these exams (per week/how many months to study prior to sitting exams etc) to achieve entry into a postgraduate course in the states.
- what study material i should look at getting
- any additional information or websites to help me with these exams

  1. Dear Dr. Vincent,
    Nice to hear from you,
You would need 3 months of 8 hours full time studying to crack these exams
Since you want to do graduate orthodontics, you need a minimum of 93-95 nbde part 1 score to apply. As you know the competition is tremendous.
Getting 95 is not actually that difficult. You need the kaplan usmle videos and lecture notes, not nbde. Download the sylabus from ADA site.
Iam sure you will do well.

  3. Sorry I'm a bit confused.
What are these Kaplan USMLE videos and lecture notes that you are referring to? I had a look at the kaplan website, and it mentioned USMLE in different steps (I, 2 CS, 2CK, 3) do i need the videos and notes from all the steps? and why would i want usmle study material when I'm taking the NBDE part I?, why not get the NBDE part I study material from kaplan? kinda confused and i'm looking for a place to start.

  5. Hey Vince, There is no Nbde physiology or usmle physiology. Its the human body physiology and usmle covers it in detail as thats what is required. Read my earlier blog about this, download the sylabus from ADA we should know it throughly. Kaplan is a tutorial thats all. Kaplan usmle or nbde does is not instrumental in setting the Qs in the exam.lol

  7. I am from Costa Rica, and wish to keep my postgraduate studies in USA. In order to apply to the NBDE do I need to send all the transcripts first??

  8. Yes Xinita, you need to send your transcripts to ECE first and get your GPA , only then you will be able to apply for NBDE.
Give me your email id, will send you the complete details.

  9. Hi there!,
I really wish to have read your blog before. I recently took part I and did poorly (76) :( and with the new regulations I can't repeat it.
I studied very hard but I can see that my efforts were not addressed properly.
After taking the exam I truly believe all your advice is accurate, and that is the reason why I am asking your advice for Part II. I know your blog is about part I but if you would like to share what study materials you consider essential to success on Part II, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks!, Lala

  15. Guys my Study plan, was 8 hours a week for 3 months with movies/ partying on Sundays. ( you need to Destress). Usmle videos/Achland videos for starters with Usml notes, the main course was some bits and pieces from here and there BRS text books, and to finsh it off you need to revise everyday for 2 hours apart from the 8 hours of new reading. ASDA and decks are for bathroom reading not for Grade 90. Download the sylabus from ADA, it does not matter where you get your reading material as long as you read everything in the syllabus. Read my earlier posts here, or on SDN were i did write loads on game plans.
I vist my blog occasionally when time permits , email me at redroulette@gmail.com for any queries.

  17. I have got 2 GPA's from ECE. Infact, I had failed in 2 subjects and I rewrote and passed them. The lower GPA includes F and higher GPA does not include F's.

can you please let me know?
